To strike a balance between capitulating on the old themes and creating something wholly new is a tricky one which is why great remix albums are not as common as one might think. I was always a big fan of remix albums as they always provided a new way to enjoy an old favorite. Now, just over a year later, we have the remix/arrangement album, PPPPPPowerup!. The critical success of VVVVVV owes much to its ambience chiefly-aided by SoulEye’s musical chiptune collection, PPPPPP. Coupling old-school graphics with an old-school soundtrack, Cavanagh and SoulEye managed to create something entirely new. Magnus Palsson, know better by his stage name SoulEye, teamed up with the great Terry Cavanagh early last year to create one of the most difficult and frustrating brilliant and challenging platformers, VVVVVV. It’s all kinds of stuff put into one amazing adventure.Īfter the jump, you’ll see the best way to almost die and why this music is perfect for that kind of activity. New original works, music for the soundtrack to rhythm game Pulsen (which includes some reworked VVVVVV themes), new tracks for VVVVVV (2.0 and 3DS exclusive music), B-sides and arrangements he’s had released on other soundtracks, and even some covers of other peoples’ work. In “Adventure,” SoulEye offers up a whole mixture of tracks. His online handle is SoulEye, and he wrote the music for VVVVVV, one of the best chip-ish soundtracks in the past few years, which helped the indie/retro movement explode onto XBL and Steam.Īs you might expect, the writer of such awesome music is not content to rest on the laurels of one soundtrack. And you probably know of him, even if that name doesn’t look familiar. He’s from Sweden, and he’s pretty excellent. So how does this metal re-imagining of the music stack up against the original soundtrack? Read on to find out.

His talent seems to have caught the attention of Pålsson, which has led to the creation of this new album. As we covered recently on OSV, Conroy has been creating some impressive metal covers of videogame music for a few years on Youtube. This new work features a collaboration between Magnus Pålsson and music remix artist and composer Jules “FamilyJules7x” Conroy. This new album, titled MMMMMM, is a power metal re-imagining of the original soundtrack. The original soundtrack, titled PPPPPP, has already received an arrange album in the form of PPPPPPowerup!, which featured arrangements by several indie composers and remix artists. Pålsson has also written music for a number of projects including Extreme Roadtrip, Drop Sort, and has even written an intro theme for Twitch caster MANvsGAME.

It’s easily some of the best indie chiptune music that’s been written in the past few years. If you’ve never heard the original soundtrack, fix that immediately. The music of VVVVVV was composed by chiptune artist Magnus Pålsson, aka Souleye.

Not only is the game engaging in its central mechanic, it’s also fairly difficult. The game has seen release on several other platforms since and has earned a large following from the indie game fan base. The game is a 2D puzzle platformer that uses gravity reversal as its primary platforming mechanic.
